Diversity Grant

In the spirit of our recent celebration of Ada Lovelace day, Google and the NLUUG announce the Google Diversity Travel and Conference Grant. Female system administrators who would like to participate in the NLUUG System Administration spring conference should apply!

The NLUUG usually sets up very high quality conferences, so if you would like to learn more about the profession of system administration, it's certainly worth checking out~ even if you're male ;-)

  1. So if youre a woman student, you get paid to attend?

Sorry but that's BS and will do nothing to get more women interested.

A financial grant is useful to ALL students, not just women.
Discrimanting against men wont get more women interested in FLOSS and is no better than the quota systems.

The male student who cant afford to go to a conference is getting discriminated against but discrimination against some is always tolerable for some people.

Is there a lack of women in FLOSS? Yes.
Should we encourage more women to take part? Yes.
Cash rewards arent the way to do it. At least not this way.
We are all equal but some more than ohers is never the right way.

  2. Hi Anonymous,

I understand your argument, and I kind-off agree with it. I'm not a big fan of giving special treatment to woman in FOSS - after all, the whole goal is that they should feel just as accepted as men. However, an initiative like this DOES give some publicity, and makes clear we, as in the FOSS community, appreciate woman and are willing to go an extra step to get them involved. Which is why, after all, I DO support the initiative from Google.
